Too Much Pampering Will Harm Your Dog

Is it normal to love your dog so much that you treat him like a part of the family? Of course, it is.

We treat family by giving them what they need, not what they want, and you should treat your dog the same way unless you want him to become fat, lazy, and uncontrollable.

Here are 7 signs you’re actually spoiling your dog:

1. You take your dog everywhere

Believe it or not, even though your dog is grateful for what you do for him, he doesn’t want to be by your side at all times. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love spending time with you, just that he needs a rest. You might think that your dog is bored at home while you’re away, but that’s not the case. The average dog sleeps more than 12 hours a day, and your dog will probably spend most of his time sleeping while you’re away.

2. Your dog has an appointment book

Keeping your dog active and entertained is important, but most dogs don’t care to keep a schedule. They just want to be dogs. While dogs love having a routine when it comes to feeding, planning other activities is of absolutely no importance to them.

3. You’re giving him treats at all times

Throwing a treat to your dog just for being cute can be hazardous to his physical and mental health. Stimulate your dog’s brain by making him work for a cookie. Reward-based training is good for dog’s health, and it builds a strong bond between the owner and his dog.

4. Your dog is always eating

Do you fill your dog’s bowl whenever it’s empty? If you do, stop right now. Dogs are not humans, and they don’t know when to stop eating. By buying cheap food and feeding your dog with it all day long you’re doing more harm than good.  If you want to feed your trusty sidekick with food of the highest quality, and you don’t want to spend a large sum of money, consider buying Royal Canin dog food at any pet store.

5. You take the same walking route every time

For dogs, it’s less about the destination and more about the journey. Having a regular walking route might seem like a good idea, but the truth is that dogs just want to follow a scent. Don’t be afraid to let your dog lead on hikes. That will get him stimulated, and he’ll become tired from tracking, running, and thinking.

6. Everything is a toy for your dog

If your dog is touching everything and you’re becoming annoyed by his behavior, you should teach him not to touch some things in your house. You can do this by buying some toys for him to make replacements. This might be a long process, but in the end, you’ll be happier, and your dog will be too.

7. You’re using dog diapers

Dog diapers are a great thing for when you have to travel, but you should avoid using them on a daily basis. They might make your life a bit easier, but they’ll spoil your dog. Sure, you might have to clean the floor a couple of times, and you’ll have to scold your dog, but eventually, he will get taught to wait until you let him out of the house.

Loving your dog is great, and there’s nothing wrong about that. However, if you think you might be spoiling him, don’t be afraid to take the foot off the pedal. Show your dog love, but let him be a dog at the same time. The bond between you and your dog will become stronger over time because of that.
