Decadent gravy, rich pumpkin pie and highly-seasoned turkey may not be the best choices for little ones who can’t have eggs, dairy or fats quite yet. Use these ideas to make Thanksgiving-themed food for your young one without adding a lot of extra stress to your day.
One Pot Thanksgiving Dinner
Cook 8 ounces of cubed breast or leg meat from the turkey with ½ cup of each peeled and cubed winter squash, white potato and sweet potato. Steam in the Babycook®. Add a few cranberries, if your baby is older than 8 months. When the ingredients are cooked, blend with some of the cooking liquid or just chop up if your baby is ready for finger food.
Pumpkin Pie Baby Food
Steam 3 cups of cubed apple, 1 sliced banana and 1 cup of sugar pumpkin cubed in the steamer basket of your baby food maker. Once cooked, puree to desired consistency with cooking liquid.
Squash Soup
Steam 1 carrot, peeled and sliced, 1 sweet apple (Gala or HoneyCrisp) cored, peeled and sliced, and 2 cups of peeled and cubed butternut squash. Puree with cooking liquid and serve.
Sweet Potato Casserole
Peel and dice a sweet potato. Cook in the Babycook®. Add a dash a of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice to bring in the lovely flavors of fall. Puree or serve as finger food, if your baby is ready.
Winter Fruit Compote
Combine 1 cup of cubed apples, 2 tablespoons of sliced dates and ¼ cup of raisins in the steam basket. Pour water into the tank to level 2. When the fruit is cooked, puree to desired consistency. This compote is great served alone, like an applesauce or served on toast, like a jam.
