Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • as needed oil for frying

Instructions 

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add warm water, mixing until dough forms a ball.
  4. On a floured surface, knead dough until smooth, about 5 minutes.
  5. Roll out dough to ⅛-inch thickness. Cut into 3-inch squares.
  6. Heat oil in a frying pan to 375°F (190°C). Fry squares until golden brown, turning once.
  7. Drain on paper towels. Serve warm with honey or powdered sugar.
