Main Ingredients
- 6 large yellow onions thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- 8 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper to taste
- 6 slices French bread toasted
- 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese
1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
2. Add the garlic and sugar to the skillet and cook for another minute.
3. Transfer the onion mixture to the slow cooker. Stir in the balsamic vinegar, beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper.
4. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours.
5. Before serving, preheat your oven to broil. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted French bread, and sprinkle with Gruyere cheese.
6. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
7. Serve hot and enjoy!
